WE DO NOT RECOMMEND DRIVING IF YOU ARE NOT ACCUSTOMED TO THE ROADS HERE IN GUATEMALA!

Driving from Guatemala City to San Marcos
Driving from Guatemala City by road approximately 4 hours drive (175KM). Drive 148 KM on the Pan-American Highway with direction Quetzaltenango (road sign 148KM), then merge on the road to the left with direction to Santa Clara and San Pablo La Laguna.

Once you arrive in San Pablo keep driving for another 3KM to San Marcos La Laguna. This road can be in very poor condition, so we would recommend taking the alternative route via Panajachel.

The majority of the travel within the area around Lake Atitlan is by small boats (called lanchas). There are fifteen ‘major’ pueblos or small towns surrounding the lake, San Marcos included. Public lanchas run daily starting at 6.30 AM, and travel clockwise to most destinations around the lake. Lanchas leave from San Pedro (west side of the lake) and travel to Panajachel (east side of the lake), then return.

The order of stops is as follows: San Pedro, San Juan, San Marcos, Maya Moon Lodge, Tzununa, Jaibalito, Santa Cruz, and lastly Panajachel. You can expect a public boat to pass every 30 minutes at most villages around the lake.

(See our FAQ”s page for boat schedules).

One of the most striking features of San Marcos La Laguna is that it has practically no roads — everything is reached by thin foot paths through trees and between buildings. Handmade signs direct you to the most common destinations at any intersection.

The homemade paths have a very intimate feel to them. They are surrounded by the plants and flowers that create almost fences that guide you in the correct path.

There are minimal streetlights, so we would recommend paying attention to where you are going and don’t be scared to ask the locals if you are lost! Be sure to carry a flashlight with you if you will be walking home at night.
